What Parents Need to Know Before a Senior Photoshoot

If you're a mom or dad of a teen, you know that senior year is heading towards you. It might feel like it's approaching at light-speed, but no matter where you are in the journey, it's a big moment. You may be feeling a mix of nervous and excited, but are surely so proud of your amazing young person. Senior photos are a huge moment in the high school journey, and your support will be needed more than ever as the time arrives. Here are some practical ways you can offer encouragement to your teen after booking their shoot!

Start with the outfits: Outfits can make or break the vibe of a senior session, so planning ahead is key. Sit down with your child and help them choose a few outfits that really reflect their personality. A mix of casual, dressy, and something that showcases their hobbies or passions (like a sports jersey or their favorite band t-shirt) is a great way to add variety. You’ll also want to make sure everything fits well and is clean, so no last-minute laundry marathons! Encourage them to bring accessories or shoes that match the look they’re going for, as these little details really bring an outfit together. Most of all, resist the urge to control and manage what they are wearing…instead, your support and encouragement will make them feel their best and feel confident.

Assist with hair and makeup: Whether your child wants a natural look or something a bit more polished, how they feel about their appearance matters. If a haircut or color is on the agenda, schedule it way before the session, so they have time to adjust to any changes. For makeup, some teens love doing it themselves, while others might prefer a professional touch. Whichever route they choose, it’s all about making sure they feel confident. Help them bring along any touch-up items, especially if they’re worried about shine or frizzy hair. A little bit of prep goes a long way in making sure they feel their best in front of the camera, and can help them feel like you care and are invested.

Suggest things that add personality: Props are a fun way to add a personal touch to your high schooler’s senior photos. Whether it’s a musical instrument, sports equipment, or a favorite book, props can help tell the story of who they are. Encourage your child to choose a few items that represent their passions or interests. But remember that less can be more. A couple of well-chosen props will do the trick without overwhelming the session. Supporting their choices without pushing your own ideas will help them feel more in control and comfortable (and can help their nerves).

Help them think ahead about the weather: If your senior’s photoshoot is happening outdoors, it’s always smart to be prepared for unexpected weather changes. Keep an eye on the forecast leading up to the session, and help your high schooler pack a small kit with essentials like water, sunscreen, and an umbrella, just in case. Comfortable shoes for walking between locations (even if they aren’t in the actual photos) can make a big difference in keeping them relaxed and ready for anything. Helping with the little things will allow them to focus more on enjoying the moment.

Be their cheerleader, not the director: Finally, the most important thing you can do is offer support and encouragement. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting everything to be perfect, but try to let go of the pressure and let your child lead the way. Trust us to guide them through poses and candid moments. Most importantly, remind your high schooler to relax, have fun, and just be themselves. They’ll feel more comfortable if they know you’re there to cheer them on, not to micromanage the session.

Supporting your high schooler before their senior photoshoot is about making them feel confident and excited for the experience. By helping with the little details, offering encouragement, and letting them take the lead, you’ll ensure they have a memorable and fun session. Ready to help your senior shine?
