Tips for Preparing for your Family Session

After many years photographing beautiful families, we have learned so many valuable lessons. We know and understand that it can feel completely overwhelming to have family photos taken, and we applaud everyone who makes sure their annual or bi-annual family portraits get documented! Planning a family photo session can feel like just another item on a long list of to-do’s, but with preparation, the experience can become a tradition and a memory your children will look back on with fondness. How do you take family photos from a stressor to a success?

Choose outfits that are comfortable for all family members: When it comes to dressing for your family photos, comfort is key. While it's tempting to go all out with fancy outfits, choosing clothing that everyone feels good in can make a big difference and make for more positive day. We recommend coordinating colors rather than matching outfits. Think soft tones, earthy colors, or even a pop of your favorite hue. Remember, if your kids are comfortable in what they’re wearing, they’re more likely to be themselves during the shoot. This means capturing genuine smiles, laughter, and those sweet in-between moments that you'll love! That doesn’t mean you can’t choose fancier outfits, but be sure everyone can move around and sit down in the choices.

Make it a fun event to look forward to: Instead of treating the photoshoot as just another appointment on your calendar, turn it into a fun event that the whole family can look forward to. In the days leading up to your session, talk to your kids about the shoot in a positive way, and include them in the planning. Show them their outfits, explain what to expect, and share the information in a calm, stress-free way. Let them know it's a special time where they get to be with their loved ones and have fun in front of the camera. Bring along some favorite items (such as stuffed animals or books) to get everyone relaxed and happy. The more relaxed and playful the atmosphere, the more authentic the photos will be.

Choose the right timing: Timing can make or break the experience, especially if you have very young children. We recommend scheduling your session during a time of day when your kids are typically in good spirits. For most families, this means avoiding nap time or mealtimes. Early mornings or late afternoons, known as the "golden hours," are ideal for capturing beautiful, natural light. But above all, work with us to find a time that works best for your family's routine. We also encourage everyone to be sure everyone has had enough protein to stay full before the shoot.

Bring snacks and provide small breaks: Let's face it, kids can get restless, especially during a longer photoshoot. To keep everyone in good spirits, we suggest packing some non-messy snacks and a non-staining drink like water. A quick snack break can do wonders for maintaining energy levels and happy faces. It’s also a great way to reward positive behavior. If needed, we’re more than happy to take a few seconds breather during the session so everyone feels refreshed and ready to keep going (please note: do not hand your littlest ones water bottles without assisting them, as it can be hard for them to manage and can result in larger spills).

Don’t worry about personally posing your family members: While posed shots are lovely, some of the best photos come from candid moments. Encourage your family to interact, laugh, and play together during the session, and don’t worry about directing them. We love capturing those genuine moments of connection that tell the story of your family. Don’t worry about everyone looking at the camera all the time. Sometimes, the best shots are the ones where everyone is simply being themselves. Trust us to capture the magic as it unfolds, and let us guide you!

Plan a positive event for afterward: To keep the positive energy flowing, consider planning a little celebration after your photoshoot. Whether it’s a family ice cream outing, a visit to the park, or a cozy movie night at home, having something to look forward to can keep everyone excited and cooperative during the session. Plus, it’s a great way to end the day on a high note and reward everyone for their effort…this creates positive connotations for picture days in their minds!

We are passionate about turning your family’s joy until tangible memories!
